Putting the pieces together
I blame the cat.
I was inspired to play with making mosaic from dyed eggshell this spring when my cat knocked down my display of pysanky eggs (elaborately decorated wax-resist Ukrainian Easter eggs).
My children and I make only a handful of pysanky each year, so a dozen broken eggs was a huge loss! I felt a deep pang of regret and self-blame for failing to put the eggs away promptly at the end of the Easter season, but that was quickly superseded by curiousity.
I’m not sure whether to credit art, therapy, or the pragmatic spirit of my resourceful Dutch heritage, but before I had even begun to clean up the mess, I found myself looking at the brightly-coloured fragments and thinking, “I wonder what I can make from these?”
The answer, of course, is more art!
